LAW 200

Law and Society
Fall 2024

Course Description. This course approaches law and society through landmark U.S. Supreme Court decisions implicating relations between the Court and the elected branches, the federal government and the states, and government and individuals.

What do key words in the Constitution mean? Why do the justices disagree about their meaning, and what principles, if any, constrain the justices’ interpretation? How does the political, historical, economic, and social environment that surrounds the justices affect their decisions? These are just some of the many questions this course will address.
