Spring 2024

Grades

Grades will be based on class attendance and participation (75%) and a short essay (25%).

Attendance and Participation. You must attend both class sessions; and you should come prepared to discuss the assigned materials. Please read all the materials before class on March 29, 2024.

Essay. Based on class discussions and readings, please write a speakers’ policy for a “hypothetical” university that resembles WashU. The policy should have two components: (1) the use of student union funds to bring speakers to campus and (2) rules about what speakers should and should not be allowed on campus. In writing the essay, please assume that the hypothetical university prefers to follow existing First Amendment doctrine.

The essay should be no longer than 3 pages (including any references), double spaced with 1-inch margins, using 12-point Times New Roman font.

Please email your essay to your TA by Friday April 19, 2024 by 5 pm central time (Your TA is the law student who led your section on March 30, 2024.) Essays will be graded down (from, e.g., an A to an A-) for each day late—including essays received after 5 pm on April 19, 2024.
